Background of the Study

Maternal near-miss cases refer to situations where women experience life-threatening complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum but survive due to medical intervention (Say et al., 2024). These cases provide crucial insights into healthcare system effectiveness, highlighting factors that contribute to maternal survival. In Sokoto State, maternal mortality remains a major concern, and studying near-miss cases can help identify gaps in emergency obstetric care and referral systems. Understanding survival factors among near-miss cases can guide policymakers in strengthening maternal healthcare services and reducing preventable maternal deaths.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of maternal healthcare services, many women in Sokoto State experience severe complications that put their lives at risk. While some survive due to timely medical intervention, others succumb to preventable causes. There is limited research on the survival factors that contribute to positive maternal outcomes in near-miss cases. Investigating these factors can provide evidence-based recommendations for improving maternal health services in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the prevalence of maternal near-miss cases in Sokoto State.

2. To identify key factors contributing to maternal survival in near-miss cases.

3. To assess the effectiveness of emergency obstetric care in managing maternal near-miss cases.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of maternal near-miss cases in Sokoto State?

2. What factors contribute to maternal survival in near-miss cases?

3. How effective is emergency obstetric care in managing maternal near-miss cases in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Timely medical intervention increases the chances of survival in maternal near-miss cases.

2. Socioeconomic and healthcare accessibility factors influence maternal survival rates.

3. Strengthening emergency obstetric care will reduce maternal near-miss cases and improve survival rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on hospitals and healthcare facilities in Sokoto State that handle maternal emergencies, evaluating survival rates and care interventions. A limitation may be the difficulty in obtaining accurate medical records of near-miss cases due to incomplete documentation.

Definitions of Terms

• Maternal Near-Miss: A situation in which a woman almost dies but survives a life-threatening obstetric complication due to medical intervention.

• Survival Factors: Medical, social, and economic conditions that contribute to a positive maternal outcome despite severe complications.
